The Armenian Genocide

Armenians in Ottoman Empire

At the begining of the 20th century, there were large groups of Armenians in the big cities and villages of Ottoman Empire, the number of Armenian population reached for some 2,5 million. Preserving their culture, history and language through the course of time.

Although Armenians were guaranteed limited freedom in the Empire, They established schools, churches, newspapers and played a big roll in the trade, commerce and agricultural development during the Ottoman Empire and they were pretty well excepted in the Ottoman community and there was relatively little violent conflict.

Armenians and other minorities were victims of high taxation system from the Ottoman Empire and considered as second class citizens, but surprisingly to many of us, Armenians and Turks lived in a relative harmony in the Ottoman Empire for centuries.
